Poem for a Friend

sols_6

Today’s slice is a poem written to go with a pair of small  silver picture frames given as a wedding shower gift for a teacher friend in my school who is getting married this summer… and moving to a new building next school year, into a new office for her new job as an assistant principal.

Snippets of Life

A collection of shiny frames
On the corner of the desk

A graduate smiling broadly,
flanked by proud parents-
A young teacher with her
very first class-
A bride and groom gazing
adoringly into one another’s eyes-
A pampered little
ball of fur-
A sweet cherubic baby
Cradled in loving arms-

These snippets of life,
Daily reminders, daily encouragers-

Life in this office, in the halls
and the rooms of this school
is important work
but more, so much more of
Life awaits outside

This really touched me – especially as for me it is the life outside that has finally started coming together – I was giving too much to the important stuff and with little acknowledgement – whilst those around me got engaged, married, bought houses, had babies, – finally this year I have pulled myself together and changed priorities to gain back some control. I don’t know if this has happened to other teachers.
    A touching poem.

  4. Those snippets really do encourage. It sounds like your friend will be really missed. I know she will miss you, but will remember with one look at the poem and frames. xo

Lovely poem. I like your message “So much more of life awaits outside.”

Your words will mean so much to her as she begins this new phase in her life. Pictures do bring us back to happy places.

This poem is sweet and so true. We surround ourselves with the reminders, in frames, of what is really important in our lives. What a thoughtful gift!

  8. Jaana says:

Lovely poem! It is could to be reminded that there is a world outside our own classrooms and offices.

  9. We frame the things we hold dear, like the special people in these photos. I can imagine she will frame the poem as well. And it is so true that life IS outside the building! Such thoughtful words in your poem!
