Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve. Lima, Peru. National Cancer Hospital. My husband recuperating from major surgery. It was not a peaceful setting, yet I remember a perfect moment of peace from that day.

Shortly before midnight, the nurses came into the room and motioned to me to follow them. We walked quietly to the end of the hall. The manger awaited. We softly hummed “Silent Night.” Through the window, fireworks burst brightly in the night sky. At the stroke of midnight, the baby Jesus was laid in the manger. In that moment, my heart calmed.

A memory from many years ago that still brings a feeling of peace.

JOY TO THE WORLD, THE LORD IS COME!
