The third graders listened to a familiar story. We talked about the story elements. To wrap it up, the students were asked to think of a new title for the story, keeping it a secret. One by one, names were pulled from the jar and each student shared his or her title. When her name was called, N was not ready. I told her we would come back to her. I thought for sure she would write down something someone else said…
But when everyone had finished, and I called on her again, she said something no one else did-
“Peter’s Sneaky Stone Soup!”
Wow! Independently, she included a writer’s craft we have practiced a few times throughout the year, but not recently. With great flair and high drama, I repeated her title and asked the class what writer’s craft she had used. “ALLITERATION!” we all shouted together.
