While at the Newport Aquarium today, where the ladies’ restrooms have signs that say “Mermaids,” I overheard a little girl very seriously talking to her grandmother, “Granny this place is for mermaids to go potty. But we just don’t have tails anymore. Now we have legs.”

It was a funny moment in the middle of a fun day. My sister and I were on a short vacation with my great-nephew. We drove from Indy to Cincy yesterday, stayed overnight, and went to the Riverwalk area today. We spent most of the day in the aquarium. What amazing creatures we saw! My nephew liked the aquarium- touching the sharks and watching the antics of the penguins. But his favorite activity of the day came after the aquarium, when we followed an enticing sign- “Hamster balls- your hamster loves them, so will you.” For $8, my nephew got zipped inside a giant plastic ball (filled with air by a leaf blower!) and rolled into a pool of water. Inside the ball, he did somersaults and tried to stand up and run. He was having a great time, and my sister and I laughed and laughed watching him.

The sweetest part of the day was when we got back, and he shared the souvenirs he had picked out for his little brother and his mom and dad. He was so excited- especially over the heart-shaped pink pillow he brought for his mom. Nice to know that a kid who seems to love video games and You Tube better than anything actually loves his family best of all!

What a lovely day you had. I wouldn’t mind trying a hamster ball myself.😊

Love these mini-vacations and especially when you have a child to share the joy of discovery. Those balls sound like fun. Don’t you just love hearing snippets of conversations? You are having a busy summer!
