Honors Day

Today was Honors Day for 1st-5th grades at our school. (Tomorrow will be promotion ceremonies for K and 6th.) Students came to school dressed in their shiny best today. Sparkly shoes on the youngest girls’ feet, fashionable heels, wedges, and strappy sandals on the older. Boys with ties, even a few three-piece suits. Girls in long, practically formal dresses. Twins in matching dresses with denim tops and neon pink skirts… one with white shoes, the other with glossy black. Some in their usual school uniforms…faded and stained at year-end, either acted like they didn’t care ( or really didn’t care).

There were varied reactions to the awards. One third grader who was called up for every category began to grin at the crowd and shrug his shoulders…”What, me again? Aw, shucks.” One second grader, who received the only high honor roll certificate in her class, broke into tears off and on the rest of the day because she only got one certificate. Her grandma had been in the audience, but mom missed it. There were other kids who got only one certificate, too- good attendance. They were greeted by loud applause, whistles and shouts by their many family members in the audience. They were smiling the rest of the day. Two kids won bikes from a business sponsor of our school. The girl who won had a friend who expressed true joy for her, but there were a lot of jealous faces looking on.

I just am not sure how I feel about it all anymore.
