Celebrating at School

Mariachis! Dancing! Food!

We had a great time celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at Ernie Pyle Elementary School!

How great to work with a principal and staff who worked together to make it happen. How great to have parents who generously shared special dishes with everyone. How great for the kids to have fun with their families at school.

I was so glad to be part of it all. One of the best moments was when one of the dads, with deep emotion in his voice, said simply, “Thank you, thank you for this.”

I wrote and posted this on Saturday. Now it’s Tuesday, time for SOL, and thinking about it still makes me smile. The planning and anticipation stretched over months. At one point, there was a Plan B in case we couldn’t get the mariachis. We worried over details. There were lists, emails, phone calls, and meetings. There were posters, flyers, and tickets (free- but we needed an idea of how many might come). There were shopping trips and cooking sessions. A LOT of people helped in a LOT of ways. It was the best of a community coming together, for the kids. Yes, it still makes me smile.

I just love to see families enjoying time with the children in school. Home – school connections are so important. Honoring all cultures is important in schools today. Thanks, Diane, for sharing. It reminds me of when I was the Director of ELA and ESL and had wonderful cultural literacy nights.

How wonderful to have families come, too and celebrate with students. We have a favorite Mexican restaurant that hosts a mariachi band every Friday night-wonderful to hear.
